Single Serving Pizzas - What is Yeast Fermentation?

Welcome chemists!

Today I have a pizza recipe - from scratch! The dough takes quite a bit of time to rest, but otherwise, this recipe is very simple to make! The recipe I've included below is for 2 servings of pizza, but when making it myself, I decided to make one pizza with all of the dough. You can make your pizzas as big or as small as you like.

You will want to grab an adult chemist to help you out with this recipe, especially when it comes to the oven. Don't burn yourself!

The lesson that comes with this recipe is yeast fermentation, which is a biological process that helps us make all sorts of breads and doughs.

Here's the video:

For 2 servings:

Ingredients:

1 cup all-purpose flour (110 g)
1/2 tsp instant yeast
2 1/4 tsp oil (10 g)
3 1/2 tbsp milk (50 mL)
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp melted butter or ghee
2 tsp egg white (You can use whole eggs if you're making 5+ servings of this at a time)

Directions:

1. Combine milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Cover and set aside to rest in a warm area (you can put it in your oven on its lowest setting) for 15 minutes.

2. In a separate bowl, beat egg, salt, and oil together until well-combined. Add the flour and combine.

3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture. Then add the melted butter and mix until you have a dough.

4. Cover the dough with a sheet of plastic wrap and the bowl with a cloth and set aside to rest for 1.5 - 2 hours in a warm area.

5. Preheat your oven to 375° F (200° C).

6. Dust your surface with flour and knead the dough for 2-3 minutes. Form the dough into a crust and place onto a baking pan prepared with parchment paper and dusted flour. Bake for about 5-10 minutes, or until you see that the dough is beginning to become golden.

7. Customization time! Assemble your pizza with your favorite toppings. Bake again for another 18-20 minutes, or until your cheese has melted.

8. Eat and enjoy!
